Heather Dickinson has been illustrating books since the early 1980’s. She has illustrated children’s books including folk tales, fairy tales, school books and reading materials.
Since childhood Heather loved writing stories and turning them into tiny picture books. Recently she completed an MA course in author/illustrated picture books at the University of Central Lancashire. While on this course she entered the Macmillan prize, a children’s book competition, and came highly commended for her book,” a mermaid on my hand”.
Heather’s work is influenced by a love of colour, European fairy tales and early Renaissance paintings.
But her main influence is children themselves, having spent many years visually recording children of picture book age (including her own) in many sketch books. This resulted in a very visual dissertation for her MA course – “Drawing children of picture book age for illustration and character development”.
Heather illustrates in full colour and black and white, examples of which (published and unpublished) are shown on this web site. Picture books are a magical world that a child can hold and share and come back to again and again.
